“Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.” Ephesians 4:19
The movie 50 shades of gray will soon be at a theater near you. I have not read the book, nor will I be seeing the movie. And, while some might lambast me for drawing conclusions about either the book or the movie without having read or watched, I don’t think you have to be a Mensa candidate to know that in this case, the plot and theme is widely known.
The marketing of the movie, both internet and TV commercials, have already broken the rules I thought were still in place, concerning decency and pornography. Let’s but it this way, I know sin when I see it.
Look, I get it, our society is obsessed with sex. What many ignore, however, is that God invented sex. He has holds the patent and the trademark. God made sex to be beautiful, celebratory and intimate… as an expression of marital love.
One of my favorite places to vacation is Lake Tahoe, California. It is a God-made lake that is crystal-clear. It is stunning! But because it’s such a popular tourist destination, it is vulnerable to all sorts of pollution. Drive in the area and you’ll see bumper stickers saying, “Keep Tahoe Blue”. Signs warn not to dump garbage in the lake.
Sex, as God intended it, has all the potential beauty of Lake Tahoe. Books and movies like 50 Shades of Gray dump a toxic load of filth, and you can’t un-see the filth once it’s there.
What is staggering is the fact that Melinda and I know “Christian” women who have not only read the book, but recommend it! I can’t even begin to process that. And now that it’s a movie, well, I guarantee the guys will join the party.
I’m recommending that you not go there. Our culture will not change unless what was said about the 1st Century Christians, can be said about us, “The Christians stood out, like flowers growing out of the mud.”
